The pandemic has made the last two years extremely challenging for all of us! As we embark on this new year of 2022, we’re all hoping for a better year and we’re all wondering what lies ahead for us both personally and around the globe. Astrology and numerology give us some fascinating clues about what’s in store. Don’t think of 2022 as a good year or a bad year. 2022 will be what you make of it! This year presents all of us with a new opportunity to open our hearts and live our best lives yet.
Covid came in on the energy of Pluto conjunct Saturn. These two planets aligned in the sign of Capricorn in January 2020. Pluto and Saturn come to meet each other in the sky only once every 34 years or so. When these two cold and steely planets come together in hard aspect, tough times follow. Restriction and limitation force us to work hard and make major changes in our lives. It’s a slow evolutionary process that tears down the old and lays new foundations for future prosperity.
The last conjunction of these planets occurred in November 1982 in the sign of Libra. The following year Ethiopia was hit with a devastating famine that lasted 2 years and resulted in an estimated 1 million deaths. It was an unfathomable tragedy in an era of widespread prosperity for the developed world. The devastation garnered worldwide attention and generated a massive grassroots wave of support, most famously the LiveAid benefit concerts that were the largest satellite and TV broadcast of all time with an estimated audience of 1.9 billion people tuned in from 150 nations, nearly 40% of the world’s entire population! It raised international humanitarian concern dramatically and brought it to the center of foregin policy for Western governments. For the first time, the world began to address the vast disparity of wealth - “the absurdity and the moral repulsion of people dying of want in a world of surplus” as LiveAid organizer Bob Geldof put it. With Libra’s emphasis on equality, fairness, and diplomacy it’s not a surprising conclusion.
As of today, the Covid worldwide death toll is estimated at 5.47 million. 2022 may well prove to be the turning point for the pandemic as well as a year of reckoning as we begin to consider the bigger picture. What is the meaning of this event that has touched all of our lives? What have we learned about ourselves and the world? What will be different for us going forward? How do we evolve as a result of this worldwide catastrophe?
With Pluto and Saturn aligning in Capricorn we are grappling with the concepts of personal versus external authority and the moral considerations of power and autonomy. What is our government responsible for and what are we as individuals responsible for? How much autonomy are we willing to give up in exchange for protection? How much power do we actually have over our own lives? Can we trust corporations to make moral judgments? Do they have our best interest at heart? Do they even have hearts? These and many more questions will be on the table for us.
In astrology, we look to the sky for meaning, to understand the patterns and movements of life on planet earth. It provides us with a hopeful picture for 2022. Jupiter, the great planet of expansion, optimism, and fortune plays a strong role this year. Jupiter, the traditional ruler of Pisces, will be transiting this sign for much of the year. Especially notable is a conjunction with Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces, in April. These two planets coming together in their native sign promises to be very fortuitous. They will create beautiful, bright, creative, and expansive energy. This is our moment to dream and to imagine a better world for ourselves. We have the opportunity to elevate our consciousness as a species, to reach a new level of awareness beyond anything we’ve known before.
The other dominant transit in 2022 is Uranus square Saturn. This transit has been active all through 2021 with Saturn dominating, but this year Uranus gains the upper hand when it comes out of retrograde on January 18th. Where Saturn led with oppression and restriction, Uranus takes charge now and things start moving quickly. Uranus is a revolutionary. The ‘Sky God’ seeks progress and he’s not afraid to shake things up in order to make change happen. He’s chaotic and disruptive, always full of surprises. With both Uranus and the Moon’s North Node transiting Taurus, the sign of earth, business, finance, and material value, we may expect disruption in food and supply chains as well as upheaval in the economy, banking and currencies. Along with flooding being very probably with so much Pisces influence this year, the Taurean concerns will be primary for us on a global level.
The US will experience its first ever Pluto return on 2/2/22. This is when Pluto returns to the exact position it was in at the time the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. Pluto takes 248 years to make a full orbit around the sun which means individuals do not experience this return in their lifetimes but nations do and this intense planet has a history of bringing dramatic transformation. Pluto is in the final degrees of Capricorn signaling a breakdown of structure, a transformation of the old ushering in a new era of world government.
The US, which has long held the position of preeminent global power is and will continue to see a massive shift in its position on the world stage. With Pluto in the second house of the US chart, internally we are struggling to come to terms with our deepest values, facing our long history of racism and inequality that has been swept under the rug for so many generations. We are also likely to see a major impact to the economy in early 2022 with the second house being native territory to Taurus.
In numerology, 2022 is a 6 year combining the energy of three 2’s. 6 years have a devil/angel quality. They are characterized by high highs and low lows. In the Major Arcana of the Tarot, Key VI is The Lovers, a card associated with choices and important decisions to be made. Often these decisions pit head against heart. 6 is also a number associated with healing and nurturing, it takes its responsibilities seriously and strives for harmony. What a beautiful goal to set for ourselves in 2022! As we each choose to focus our intentions toward our own highest good, we will collectively achieve harmony as a planet. We may face some big challenges in the year ahead both as individuals and as a species, but we can choose how these challenges shape us and who we will become.
